(CNN) — SpaceX aborted the historic launch of its Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station on Saturday at the last second because of a rocket engine glitch.

The launch would the first attempt to send a private spacecraft to the space station. SpaceX and NASA officials say the next launch attempts could come Tuesday or Wednesday in the early morning hours at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.

As the countdown reached zero, the engines began firing — but then shut down, NASA and SpaceX officials said.

SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell said “high chamber pressure” was detected in Engine 5 of the Falcon 9, the rocket to carry the Dragon spacecraft. She said technicians will inspect the engines later on Saturday and is looking forward to another takeoff soon.

CNN explains: Commercial space flight

“This is not a failure,” Shotwell told reporters. “We aborted with purpose. It would have been a failure if we lifted off with an engine trending in this direction.”

NASA’s Kennedy Space Center also posted a Twitter message Saturday saying “early data shows that the chamber pressure on Engine 5 of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket was high, causing the abort.”

The mission is designed to establish whether SpaceX can deliver cargo to the station.

NASA and SpaceX envision the unmanned Dragon docking at the station, with the station crew recovering food, water and other provisions from inside the Dragon.

If the mission succeeds, SpaceX will try to undertake other cargo missions as part of a contract with NASA. SpaceX hopes the experience with the cargo flights will help it reach its goal of carrying astronauts aboard the Dragon.

“The flight is an ambitious test for the company,” NASA said.

CNN’s John Couwels contributed to this report.

(CNN) — It’s no shock that people love to hate Facebook.

On Friday, for some, the emphasis shifted to hate as Facebook went public, turning its CEO into a billionaire and, as CNNMoney gracefully put it, making “thousands of millionaires” out of the rest of its staff and stockholders.

“Well most Americans are bitter and hateful toward anyone and anything more successful than themselves,” one commenter wrote on that story.

“Just me or anyone else really hoping for Facebook stock to take a nose dive and never come back up? I want to watch it drop like a rock,” one Twitter user wrote on the eve of Facebook’s initial public offering Thursday.

Here’s a rant from one financial analyst, spotted by Time.com, which shares a parent company with CNN and authored a recent post called “Sick of hearing about Facebook? You’re not alone.”

“But do I really need to see another article about how the Ferrari dealers in Silicon Valley have brought in extra inventory in anticipation of all the new millionaires? Or how Menlo Park and Palo Alto housing prices, which were already sky-high, are soaring even higher from all the new money?” the analyst, Tracey Ryniec, wrote.

“I can’t wait for this week to be over so we can talk about some other companies.”

Some of the venom online was directed at the Winklevoss twins, those rowing-happy Harvard kids who repeatedly have been suing for part of Facebook.

Dubbed “the Winklevii” in the film “The Social Network,” Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss are set to make millions off of Facebook’s IPO despite the fact that some courts have rejected their claims that Zuckerberg stole their idea for his blockbuster website. They could make $228 million for their 6 million shares in the company, according to a CNNMoney gallery on Facebook’s new billionaires.

At The New Yorker, Silvia Killingsworth writes that we all should give the Winklevii a bit of a break — especially since they’ve been good sports about their anti-fame:

“Sure, the Winklevii may sound a little cheesy finishing each other’s sentences — a well-enunciated mix of locker-room pep talk and well-worn entrepreneurial Web-2.0 jargon — and they will be subject to Al Gore-style Internet-invention jokes until the end of time. But who’d have known they’d be such good sportsmen about it? In the movie, Cameron gets frustrated at one point and hollers. ‘Screw it! Let’s gut the frigging nerd!’ In real life, the twins seem to have become entirely content with chasing the nerd around the courts, and collecting their cut of the biggest tech I.P.O. in history.”

Others are teasing CEO Mark Zuckerberg himself.

The comedian Andy Borowitz posted a fake letter from the 28-year-old to potential investors. It opens:

“For years, you’ve wasted your time on Facebook. Now here’s your chance to waste your money on it, too.”

It ends like this:

“One last thing: what will, I, Mark Zuckerberg, do with the $18 billion I’m expected to earn from Facebook’s IPO? Well, I’m considering buying Greece, but that would still leave me with $18 billion. LOL. Friend me, Mark”

According to The New York Times, Facebook’s new billionaires may spend their money in subtle (but still over-the-top) ways. On Thursday, the paper looked at spending culture in Silicon Valley, finding that the really rich types spend money in ways that are difficult to detect without a rich-person radar:

“Fabulous home theaters are tucked into the basements of plain suburban houses. Bespoke jeans that start at $1,200 can be detected only by a tiny red logo on the button. The hand-painted Italian bicycles that flash across Silicon Valley on Saturday mornings have become the new Ferrari — and only the cognoscenti could imagine that they cost more than $20,000,” Somini Sengupta writes for the paper. “Even at Facebook, ground zero for the nouveau tech riche, peer pressure dictates that consumption be kept on the down low.”

Part of the reason some people are frustrated with Facebook this week is that all of us — the users of Facebook — are essentially the ones making the company so much money. My colleague Doug Gross looked at this on Wednesday. If you want to make the point really personal, check out this widget, which will tell you exactly how many dollars your Facebook page is making for the company.

It’s an estimate, of course, but it brings the point home. Here are details on the math they’re using to make the calculations, in case you’re feeling brainy.

Others used the opportunity to gripe about Facebook’s privacy settings, which are notoriously complicated (perhaps since the company wants info to be public):

“Why is Facebook going public? They couldn’t figure out the privacy settings either,” wrote one Twitter user.

Not all of the reaction is negative, of course.

Many tech bloggers and Wall Street watchers are cheering on Facebook’s run at the market, saying it’s yet another Steve Jobsian expression of the American Dream. “In 2004, who could have predicted that a Harvard sophomore would be destined to lead his dorm-room creation to a gajillion-dollar IPO eight years later?” wrote Kasia Cieplak-Mayr von Baldegg at The Atlantic. “The life and times of Mark Zuckerberg are dramatic, even epic, and — you might say — lyrical.”

For more on that, check out this faux-musical about the company’s rise.

“I’m happy for Facebook, Zuck and others put in their own time efforts and own capital they deserve this reward,” another Twitter pundit said. “American Dream!”

Some people will see this post and say, “Yeah, yeah yeah. Haters gonna hate.”

That’s the tack Facebook appears to be taking.

According to the blog TechCrunch, Facebook’s Toronto office created a poster that counters all the negativity by saying “Likers gonna like” — a riff on the site’s mechanism for sharing content with friends.

The blog post ends with this little bit of sappy futurism:

“Facebook’s mission is ‘making the world more open and connected.’ Sometimes that means making people uncomfortable at first. You don’t have to agree with how Mark Zuckerberg does things, and you can hate if you want to. But remember, Facebook’s just the messenger. The message is the future.”

(CNN) — Authorities have arrested a suspect in the case of an alleged police impersonator who is believed to have killed two motorists in Mississippi, the Tunica County Sherriff’s Office said.

James D. Willie, 28, of Sardis, Mississippi, was arrested and the 9mm handgun authorities say was used in two recent highway shootings was in his possession, the sheriff’s office said.

The arrest may put an end to a case that caused a massive manhunt by law enforcement and created panic and fear for many drivers throughout Mississippi.

“Hundreds of man hours have been devoted to tracking down and arresting this individual,” Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant said. “Public safety is of paramount concern to us. Just as a week ago, with the resolution of the kidnap/murder case in north Mississippi, again we see the effective results of a unified effort of several law enforcement agencies working together.”

Investigators with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation had raised the possibility that someone posing as a police officer was to blame for the shooting deaths of 74-year-old Tom Schlender and 48-year-old Lori Anne Carswell, which happened 55 miles apart in northwest Mississippi.

Willie was arrested Tuesday on an unrelated offense. Authorities found the suspect with a woman who claimed that he raped her.

He was arrested, and the semiautomatic Ruger handgun he had was also taken into custody.

“It was determined after testing by state Crime Lab scientists, the weapon matched the weapon used in two murders in northwest Mississippi last week,” a Tunica County Sherriff’s Office statement said.

The news of this arrest comes a day after authorities said they were questioning a different suspect in the case.

Authorities said a different man was picked up after stopping two drivers Wednesday night. That man, identified as James Lucas, 45, of Yazoo City, was driving a blue Mercury Marquis that used to be a police car and still had flashing blue lights behind its grille, Humphreys County Sheriff Investigator Sam Dobbins said.

Dobbins said investigators searched Lucas’ home and found handcuffs and fake badges.

Early Friday, it was unclear what, if any, connection Lucas had to the case.

(CNN) — Trayvon Martin’s girlfriend, talking to him on the telephone, heard the teenager saying, “get off, get off” in the moments before his cell phone cut off and he was shot dead, according to a recording of the girl’s interview with a prosecutor released Friday.

Another witness, however, seems to put Martin on top of George Zimmerman for at least part of the struggle, according to another recording released Friday.

“Where I first walked out there, the black guy was on top and the only reason I can tell that was because the guy that was on the ground under him at that point wrestling was definitely a lighter color,” the witness, whose name has not been made public, said in the interview.

Martin was African-American. Zimmerman is white and Hispanic.

The recordings provide the most detailed look yet into previously reported witness statements detailing the last moments of Martin’s life.

Martin was shot to death February 26 while walking in the Sanford, Florida, neighborhood where he was staying during a visit with his father.

Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, is charged with second-degree murder in the death, which sparked nationwide protests and inflamed public passions over race relations and gun control.

The girl, whose name has not been made public, told Assistant State Attorney Bernie de la Rionda that Martin got away from the man, who turned out to be Zimmerman, but only temporarily.

He was out of breath from running away, and scared, she said, and decided not to keep running because he was close to the house where he was staying.

And as Zimmerman drew closer, the girl said, Martin called out,” Why you following me for?” according to the recording.

“I hear this man, like this old man, say, ‘What are you doing around here?’ ” the girl said.

The girl said she called out to Martin, asking what was happening, but he didn’t answer. The next thing she heard was a bumping sound, followed by what might have been a scuffle.

“I could hear it a little bit, ‘Get off, get off,’ then the phone just hung up,” the girl said.

The other witness said he heard loud noises outside his home that dark, wet night, and when he looked outside, he saw one person in dark clothing over someone who appeared to be wearing a red or white piece of apparel.

“I heard, ‘Help, help, help,’ and I yelled at them and said, ‘Hey cut it out,’ ” the witness told police. He then called 911.

Zimmerman has claimed self-defense in the shooting, saying Martin charged him after the two exchanged words, knocking him to the ground and hitting his head repeatedly against a concrete sidewalk.

Prosecutors say Zimmerman profiled Martin, an African-American teenager wearing a hoodie, as a criminal and killed him, even though he was doing nothing wrong.

The witness said he couldn’t say what sparked the incident.

“I didn’t see how it started, I didn’t see how it ended. I just saw the part where they were in an altercation on the ground,” the witness said.

The recordings released Friday are the latest in a series of revelations from the official investigation into the shooting. Authorities are making details of the case publicly available as attorneys prepare for Zimmerman’s trial.

Also released this week was a document filed with prosecutors by Sanford police two weeks after the shooting, urging Zimmerman’s arrest.

New documents shed light on Trayvon Martin killing

“The encounter between George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin was ultimately avoidable by Zimmerman, if Zimmerman had remained in his vehicle and awaited the arrival of law enforcement, or conversely if he had identified himself to Martin as a concerned citizen and initiated dialog (sic) in an effort to dispel each party’s concern” the police request to arrest Zimmerman said. “There is no indication that Trayvon Martin was involved in any criminal activity.”

Other documents released this week include Martin’s autopsy report, a fire department report on Zimmerman’s injuries and an FBI analysis of emergency calls in which someone can be heard screaming in the background.

The autopsy report showed that Martin died of a gunshot wound to the chest fired from within 36 inches and that he had traces of marijuana in his blood and urine.

In his 911 call just before the shooting, Zimmerman had speculated that the teen looked like he was “up to no good or he’s on drugs or something.”

Martin’s blood contained THC, which is the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, according to autopsy results released Thursday. The autopsy was conducted February 27, the day after the teenager was shot dead.

Toxicology tests found elements of the drug in the teenager’s chest blood — 1.5 nanograms per milliliter of one type (THC), as well as 7.3 nanograms of another type (THC-COOH) — according to the medical examiner’s report. There also was a presumed positive test of cannabinoids in Martin’s urine, according to the medical examiner’s report. It was not immediately clear how significant these amounts were.

No precise levels on the urine were released.

Dr. Michael Policastro, a toxicologist, cautioned against reading too much into the blood THC levels, adding that one cannot make a direct correlation between those findings and a level of intoxication.

He also said that levels of THC, which can linger in a person’s system for days, can spike after death in certain areas of the body because of redistribution.

And Dr. Drew Pinsky, an addiction specialist who hosts a show on CNN’s sister network HLN, added that marijuana typically does not make users more aggressive.

Concentrations of THC routinely rise to 100 to 200 nanograms per milliliter after marijuana use, though it typically falls to below 5 ng/ml within three hours of it being smoked, according to information on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website.

While some states have zero-tolerance policies for any drug traces for driving while impaired, others set certain benchmarks, the website of California’s Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs notes. In Nevada, that equates to 2 ng/ml for THC and 5 ng/ml for THC-COOH, also known as marijuana metabolite. The cutoff level in Ohio is 2 ng/ml for THC and 50 ng/ml for THC-COOH.

What happened that night?

Martin’s father, Tracy, had taken his son with him to Sanford, about four hours away from the boy’s home and where the father’s fiancee lived, after the teen was suspended for 10 days from Michael M. Krop High School in Miami.

According to records obtained by The Miami Herald, Martin had been suspended from school three times: once for writing graffiti on a door, another time for school truancy and the last time because of drug residue found in his backpack.

Just before the shooting, Zimmerman, 28, called 911 to complain about a suspicious person in his neighborhood.

In the call, Zimmerman said he was following Martin after the teen started to run, prompting the dispatcher to tell him, “We don’t need you to do that.”

Prosecutors say Zimmerman disregarded the advice, leading to a confrontation between the two.

Much has been made about whether Zimmerman during that call used a racial epithet in referring to Martin. But an FBI analysis, released Thursday, determined that the word could not be definitively identified “due to weak signal level and poor recording quality.”

A screaming voice could be heard on other 911 calls placed by neighbors, with some speculating that those screams came from Martin and others that they belonged to Zimmerman. The FBI did not make a final determination either way, citing several reasons, including the fact they came during “an extreme emotional state,” that there weren’t enough words to make a good comparison and that the sound quality was low and distant.

FBI analysis — Zimmerman’s 911 call (pdf — strong language)

Zimmerman claimed, according a police report released earlier, that he’d been “assaulted (by Martin) and his head was struck on the pavement.”

According a report from the Sanford Fire Department, released Thursday, Zimmerman had “abrasions to his forehead,” “bleeding/tenderness to his nose,” and a “small laceration to the back of his head” when emergency personnel arrived at the scene at 7:27 p.m., six minutes after they were first called.

By that time, Martin had no apparent pulse, according to the fire and EMS report. Emergency personnel attempted mouth-to-mask resuscitation and chest compressions, to no avail. He was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m.

Prosecutors have said Zimmerman killed the unarmed teenager after unjustly after profiling him. Zimmerman, who has pleaded not guilty, has said that he shot Martin in self-defense.

The start of the trial hasn’t been set.

The case put a spotlight on race relations, spurring protests nationwide and drawing prominent civil rights leaders to central Florida denouncing the actions of Sanford police and calling for Zimmerman’s arrest. Special prosecutor Angela Corey announced he’d been charged on April 11, weeks after Sanford police initially declined to do so.

The case also raised questions about gun laws, as well as the merits of the “stand your ground” law in Florida and similar laws in other states that allow people to use deadly force anywhere they feel a reasonable threat of serious injury or death.

CNN’s Vivian Kuo and Danielle Dellorto, and InSession’s Jessica Thill contributed to this report.

(CNN) — Friends may be priceless. But ‘friending’ is worth $38 a share.

That’s what Facebook set as the initial price when its stock begins trading on Wall Street Friday morning. That’s at the top end of the range analysts were expecting and gives the company a valuation of roughly $104 billion.

That stock price will be the biggest opening ever for a tech company and the third-largest IPO in history — behind only Visa and Italian utility company ENEL.

On the Web, reactions ran the gamut from deliriously hopeful to harshly negative for the social-media giant’s Wall Street potential.

“A $104 billion market capitalization puts Facebook at more than 100 times its trailing earnings,” wrote John Constine and Kim-Mai Cutler for technology blog TechCrunch. “That’s a big multiple to live up to, and it will likely need to add bold new revenue streams to justify the mammoth valuation.”

And it wasn’t just the pros weighing in. In fact, it seemed like everyone on the Internet had an opinion.

Business Insider posted a poll (obviously not scientific) asking readers where they thought the $38 stock would be by the end of the day Friday.

In early results, a pessimistic 17 percent said under $35. But the biggest cluster of respondents guessed somewhere between $40-55. (Thirteen percent said $40-45, another 13 percent said $45-50 and, yes, yet another 13 percent said $50-55).

A hopeful 8 percent predicted the stock would skyrocket at otherworldly levels, winding up over $90 a share.

On Twitter, many observers seemed to be rooting against Facebook and its early investors.

“Just me or anyone else really hoping for Facebook stock to take a nose dive and never come back up? I want to watch it drop like a rock,” tweeted a user who identified himself as Thomas Bryant from Austin, Texas.

“Facebook just raised $16 billion in its stock offering! Let’s all delete our accounts and leave investors high and dry!” tweeted Evil Wylie, the Twitter alter ego of New York author Andrew Shaffer.

On Thursday afternoon, shares were released to big-time brokers who have already agreed to buy them. Ordinary investors have to wait until Friday morning, when shares begin selling publicly

While the market opens at 9:30 am, Facebook’s shares won’t start trading until at least an hour or so afterward because it’s newly listed.

While opinions in the business and tech communities have differed on whether the massive social network is a good investment, analysts have largely been bullish on the stock. There’s been heavy demand, leading Facebook on Wednesday to announce it will sell about 25% more shares than it had originally planned, bringing its total to 421 million shares.

At CNN content partner Mashable, a blog that got its start focusing exclusively on social media and saw its popularity rise as Facebook’s did, the staff geared up by creating an IPO-inspired playlist on music site Spotify (which, perhaps not coincidentally, is accessible only through a Facebook account).

Making the list? “Mo Money, Mo Problems,” by The Notorious B.I.G., “Rich” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs,” “Money (That’s What I Want) by Barrett Strong and “If I Had $1,000,000″ by Barenaked Ladies, among others.

Even as tech and financial gurus (self-appointed and otherwise) waited with bated breath for the opening, opining either for or against the financial future of the site some had to face the hard truth: We have no idea what’s going to happen.

“Of course, much of this is speculative and depends on the market’s response to Facebook,” VentureBeat’s Jennifer Van Grove wrote in a post quoting analysts about the IPO. “For now, all we can do is wait and watch the clock in anticipation of tomorrow’s opening. Tick tock.”

CNNMoney and CNN’s Brandon Griggs contributed to this report.

(CNN) — Trayvon Martin had drugs in his system when he was fatally shot earlier this year by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida, according to autopsy results released Thursday.

There was also a presumed positive test of cannabinoids in Martin’s urine. It was not immediately clear how significant these amounts were.

He died from a gunshot wounded to chest fired from “intermediate range,” according to the medical examiner’s report, which was one of several documents on the case released Thursday by the office of special prosecutor Angela Corey.

The autopsy report lists the manner of death as a homicide.

Zimmerman, 28, is charged with second-degree murder for killing Martin in the Sanford neighborhood where the African-American teen was staying.

Prosecutors have said Zimmerman, who is a white Hispanic, killed the unarmed teenager unjustly after profiling him. Zimmerman, who has pleaded not guilty, has said that he shot Martin in self-defense.

The start of the trial hasn’t been set.

Los Angeles (CNN) — The remaining plaintiff in the sexual battery lawsuit against John Travolta fired his lawyer, bringing an end to the case, the lawyer told CNN on Thursday.

The suit filed in federal court last week accused the actor of groping two male massage therapists at hotels in Los Angeles and Atlanta in January.

Attorney Okorie Okorocha, who initially represented the men identified only as John Doe #1 and John Doe #2, said he did not know why his Atlanta client decided to withdraw from the lawsuit.

John Doe #1, who said that Travolta sexually harassed him at the Beverly Hills Hotel, hired Los Angeles attorney Gloria Allred on Tuesday, just hours after he withdrew from Okorocha’s lawsuit.

Allred said in a statement Tuesday that she and her new client would discuss if a new lawsuit would be filed against Travolta.

Travolta’s lawyer, Martin Singer, called the allegations by the men “ridiculous.”

(CNN) — A New York medical examiner will begin an autopsy Thursday on Mary Kennedy, the estranged wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who was found dead at her Westchester County home. She was 52.

Her death is the latest for a family that has seen its share of tragedy.

“We know from a history of this family, it’s very hard being a Kennedy, either being a blood Kennedy or being married to one,” Laurence Leamer, a Kennedy biographer, said on CNN’s “Erin Burnett OutFront.” “The overwhelming celebrity, the attention, the obligations, the expectations that you’re supposed to do something with your life. It’s very, very hard.”

In 1968, Robert F. Kennedy Sr. was assassinated in California while making a run for the White House. His death came more than four years after his brother, President John F. Kennedy, also died at the hands of an assassin.

More than three decades later in 1999, John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, and his sister-in-law, Lauren Bessette, died when a plane he was piloting crashed in the waters off Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. David Kennedy died of a drug overdose and Michael Kennedy was killed in a skiing accident.

Few details of Mary Kennedy’s death were immediately available.

The Bedford Police Department confirmed Wednesday that they were investigating a possible unattended death at an address owned by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Authorities found a deceased individual inside “an out building” on the property, police said in a statement.

“It is with deep sadness that the family of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. mourns the loss of Mary Richardson Kennedy, wife and mother of their four beloved children. Mary inspired our family with her kindness, her love, her gentle soul and generous spirit,” a statement by the husband’s family said.

“We deeply regret the death of our beloved sister Mary, whose radiant and creative spirit will be sorely missed by those who loved her. Our heart goes out to her children who she loved without reservation,” her family said in a statement.

The couple married in a civil ceremony in 1994 when Mary Richardson, a designer, was six months pregnant, according to the Westchester County Journal News. One month prior to the wedding, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. divorced his first wife, Emily Black, the mother of his two oldest children, the newspaper reported.

He filed for divorce from Mary Kennedy two years ago, but the couple was still married at the time of her death, her family attorney, Kerry A. Lawrence, said.

Mary Kennedy was “a tremendously gifted architect and a pioneer and relentless advocate of green design who enhanced her cutting edge, energy efficient creations with exquisite taste and style,” Robert F. Kennedy’s family said in a statement.

She advocated finding a cure for food allergies and asthma and was a co-founder of the Food Allergy Initiative, which is the world’s largest private source of funding for food allergy research, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s family said.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a prominent environmental lawyer who is a professor at Pace Law School in White Plains, New York, is the third of 11 children born to Ethel and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy.

Details of the couple’s private lives were exposed after Robert F. Kennedy Jr. filed for divorce in Westchester County on May 12, 2010.

The next evening, according to police records, Bedford police responded to a 911 call. When police arrived at the Kennedy residence, they found the couple in an argument over taking their four children to a carnival at St. Patrick’s School.

According to a “domestic incident” report filed by the officer on the scene, “Mr. Kennedy stated that his wife was intoxicated and was acting irrational so he took the children to the carnival to remove them from the situation.”

No one was injured, the report said.

Two days later, Mary Kennedy was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

At the time, Bedford Police Lt. Jeff Dickans told CNN that a Bedford police officer saw Kennedy’s 2004 Volvo swerving onto the curb of Greenwich Road in Bedford and asked her to pull over.

Kennedy had slurred speech, and a blood-alcohol content above 0.08 percent, the legal limit in New York. She was charged with driving while intoxicated.

Lawrence said the case resulted in a reduction to a violation, the criminal charge was dismissed and her driver’s license was suspended for 90 days.

A second arrest occurred in August of the same year in the town of Pleasant Valley, in which she was charged with driving while impaired by prescription drugs, Lawrence said. Those charges were dismissed completely in July 2011 because all the drugs were prescribed and taken as her physician advised, the attorney said.

As a designer, Mary Kennedy specialized in green architecture. In a book entitled “Kennedy Green House” and co-authored by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., he describes how he and his wife restored their flooded, black-mold-infested home into an eco-friendly residence.

In the book, her husband wrote that she had worked for the design firm Parish-Hadley and worked on the renovation of the Naval Observatory in Washington, the official residence of the U.S. vice president.

CNN’s Michael Martinez and Rob Frehse contributed to this report

(CNN) — Confusion, fear, frustration — emotions are running high among Greece’s people as they face the prospect of new elections next month and massive uncertainty over the country’s economic future.

No party was able to form a coalition government after the vote earlier this month, and there is no guarantee that the elections set for June 17 will result in political stability either.

Greeks set election date amid fears

Meanwhile, the idea that Greece might leave the euro, the single currency used by 17 nations, is gaining traction despite the latest vows of support from European leaders, and the Greek people continue to suffer under painful austerity measures.

Those austerity measures include the tax increases and painful cuts to wages, services and pensions that have angered many voters and sent them flocking to back parties such as the leftist Syriza coalition, rather than the more moderate PASOK and New Democracy.

Alex Tsompanidis, a 20-year-old medical student from Athens, told CNN the current crisis is affecting every aspect of life, even people’s friendships.

“I can honestly say that the fragile political situation in Greece has scared almost everyone I know,” he said.

“People have been considering withdrawing their bank deposits, if they haven’t done this already. Most importantly, however, this recent political turmoil — and the elections to follow — has put a burden on everyone’s interactions and everyday life.

“People in Greece are now divided. I keep arguing with my friends concerning our voting preferences. Misinformation is rampant, and everyone is critical of everybody else.”

Greek President Karolos Papoulias raised the specter of a run on banks Tuesday, after the central bank reported that Greeks pulled about 800 million euros out of the banking system on Monday.

“There is, of course, no panic, but there is fear that could develop into panic,” Papoulias said, describing what the central bank governor told him.

English language newspaper Athens News said its reporters had been out to banks in the past two days and seen no signs that a “rush” was on.

Journalist Thanasis Trompoukis, based in Athens, also rejected the idea that his fellow citizens are panicking, but said many fear for the future.

Woman ‘sacrificed for a future that never came’

Part of the problem is confusion over whether Greece really risks being kicked out of the euro zone if it does not abide by stringent European bailout terms, he said, because every politician gives a different answer.

“We hear so many things and we don’t know where the truth lies,” Trompoukis said. “Now we wait for new elections and, for sure, people think that neither Pasok nor New Democracy, the two major parties, can help the country. And we are sure that the measures that Europe asks us to take will not solve the problems for Greece (either).”

Those austerity measures include the tax increases and painful cuts to wages, services and pensions that have angered many voters and cost Pasok and New Democracy much of their previous support.

The political deadlock is leading to fears that Greece will not have a government in place when it needs to make critical debt payments, which could in turn jeopardize its place in the euro zone.

Business leaders prepare for ‘Grexit’

At the same time, its people ask how much hardship they can be expected to take.

“Here in Greece many people are really poor right now,” said Trompoukis, pointing out that for many workers salaries have dropped by more than a third over the past year, but costs have not.

“They don’t have the money to cover their basic needs, such as to buy food or pay for their utilities or their phones, and every day, more and more (people) get in that situation. So if you don’t have money to buy food, you’re not worried about the European future of the country — you are worried about your survival.”

Greek media reports reflect the pain many people are feeling, as well as the sense that they are being unfairly asked to pay for a crisis not of their making.

“The country will once again test its endurance limits as going back to the polls is unavoidable,” said the daily Kathimerini newspaper Wednesday, as the date for a new election was announced.

I Avgi, a daily left-leaning newspaper published in Athens, suggested the international community is trying to shock the Greek people into electing a government that will stick to the bailout deal despite the painful austerity measures attached.

“The bailout forces and troika create hell for 30 days in order ‘to correct’ the vote of the people,” are the opening words of one its main stories.

Turnout was much lower than usual in the May 6 election, said Marios Efthymiopoulos, president of the Thessaloniki-based think tank Strategy International, likely reflecting people’s disillusionment with the system.

He says his country is in urgent need of a stable, credible government to restore confidence and let investors know that Greece is “open for business.”

Greeks will consider themselves European whether they are in the euro zone or not, said Efthymiopoulos, a former visiting scholar at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University in the United States.

But most people do not want Greece to leave the euro zone, despite the huge debt it must carry to stay in the club. “The problem is how will you repay that debt? How will you emerge as a winner from that debt? That’s not easy to do,” Efthymiopoulos said.

He also warns that if Greece were to quit the euro and return to a national currency, such as the drachma, the move would result in years of turmoil and cost money the nation does not have.

Efthymiopoulos wants to see more young people in politics, bringing fresh ideas and a more outward-looking perspective. Reform of the country’s laws and electoral system is also needed, he said, if long-term stability is to be achieved.

In the meantime, no one will listen to the interim prime minister sworn in Wednesday, he warns, and Greece will continue to flounder until a government is convincingly elected that can win the trust of its own people and build alliances abroad.

“We have no allies whatsoever,” he said. “We are not credible and nobody trusts us — and that is unfortunate because some of us are trustworthy, and now we need to prove that.”

Tsompanidis, studying medicine at the University of Athens, agrees that people struggle to know who to believe at the moment. They don’t know what to make of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s comments on Greece, or the speeches of their own politicians, he said.

However, he said, “two things are certain: nobody wants Greece to exit the euro and everyone can see that the financial situation in Greece has deteriorated rapidly, with no light at the end of the tunnel.”

Tsompanidis said he has taken part in some of the many anti-austerity protests that have filled the capital’s streets in recent years.

Fueling many people’s anger is the fact that the country’s huge debt is a result of government overspending and corruption, rather than private debt, he said. Meanwhile, those who do pay taxes, in a country where tax evasion is a big problem, have to shoulder even more of the burden.

Like many students of his generation, Tsompanidis anticipates that after graduation he will have to leave Greece — where more than half of those under age 25 were unemployed as of January, according to European Commission figures — to seek work elsewhere.

Journalist Trompoukis, 32, said four of his friends have left Greece to find work in recent months.

“If you asked me two years ago, I would never believe that so many young people would leave Greece and go to London or Germany or other European countries,” he said. “It’s very sad.”

Tsompanidis believes that while the tough austerity measures imposed on his country may have kept the banks and lenders afloat, it has not helped restore investor confidence in Greece, “instead plunging the country in internal bankruptcy and misery.”

And he is upset by the increasingly negative view of Greece that many outside his country seem to hold.

“I am very distraught that the world believes Greeks are lazy and useless. I am very disappointed to watch everyone lose faith in Greece and mistake our inadequate political establishment with everyone else in this country,” he said.

“We want our European ‘partners’ to help us restore growth and the prospects of the economy, but nobody is willing anymore, and that is a disheartening realization.”

CNN’s Michael Saba contributed to this report.

(CNN) — Mary Kennedy, from whom Robert F. Kennedy Jr. filed for divorce in 2010, is dead, an employee of the Westchester County, New York, medical examiner’s office said Wednesday.

The employee, who declined to give his name, told CNN he would provide no further details about the manner and cause of death.

The family released a statement saying, “We deeply regret the death of our beloved sister Mary, whose radiant and creative spirit will be sorely missed by those who loved her. Our heart goes out to her children who she loved without reservation.”

The Bedford Police Department earlier confirmed they were investigating a possible unattended death at an address owned by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Authorities found a deceased individual inside “an out building” on the property, police said in a statement.
