Why do I have to choose search types?
By default Link Vault enables you to search for ALL the words, ANY of the words, or an EXACT Phrase using the "Search for" option on the advanced web search form.
[ top of page ]How does the Language Filter work?
The Language Filter enables you to display results available in any one of 36 languages. By default, Link Vault will search sites in your Preferred language (detected automatically based on what country you are located in). If you'd like to see results from sites in Spanish only, you can select "Spanish" from the language menu.
For the U.S. and Western-European countries, the character set will normally be ISO-8859 or Unicode (UTF-8).
[ top of page ]How do I include and exclude words or phrases from my query?
Word Filters allow you to determine precisely which words should be included in or excluded from your query. All words entered into a text box will be considered a phrase, and may be specified as follows:
| Must Include | : | Pages without this word or phrase are discarded. Works the same way as putting a '+' or "AND" in front |
| Must not Include | : | Pages with this word or phrase are discarded. Works the same way as putting a '-' or "NOT" in front |
Further, these inclusions and exclusions may be applied to specific regions of the document if so desired. The word or phrase may be:
| in the text | : | Where the text is found in the body text of the page |
| in the title | : | Where the text is found in the title of the page only |

Does Link Vault support any query shortcuts or special keywords?
A great deal of the Advanced Search features available on Link Vault are easily accessible as explained in our special Query Language Guide. Using these shortcuts will allow you to search for documents in specific languages or include and exclude terms.
[ top of page ]How do the Domain Filters work?
The Domain Filters enable you to limit results either by Top-Level Domain, (.com, .edu, .se, .uk, .jp) or by specific website, (disney.com, stanford.edu, fast.no). Either type may be specified as:
| Include results from | : | Only pages from the domains entered are returned. |
| Exclude results from | : | Only pages from domains other than those entered are returned. |
Multiple entries in either box are allowed, and should be separated by spaces. The user may also "only include" some domains, while "excluding" others. An important note here is that these filters operate at the domain level only, (i.e. dell.com) and not at the host level, (www.dell.com) so the former is a valid entry, the latter is not.
The Limit to region option will limit your search to a geographical region, based on the top level domain names for that region.
Link Vault also lets you search for documents from particular geographic regions.
[ top of page ]How do the Result Restrictions work?
The Result Restrictions (i.e., include and exclude options) enable you to restrict or limit what Link Vault returns to you as results for your query.
File format: Restrict the type of files/pages you wish to search for.
Pages updated: Restrict the time-range you wish to search for documents in. To search for pages updated after a given date, select the "after" checkbox and enter your date. To search for pages updated before a given date, use the "before" option. Select both to search for a time-range.
[ top of page ]How do I search for PDF, plain text, Word, Excel or Powerpoint files only?
Link Vault currently indexes the full text of millions PDF, plain text, Word, Excel and Powerpoint files. If you'd like to search for these file types only, go to the advanced search page and use the File format option in the Restrict Results section.
You can find the above files mixed in with regular Web Pages results. These files are indicated with, for example, [PDF], after the result title on the result page.
[ top of page ]Can I limit the number of results that display on the results page?
Search results per page: Specify the number of listings to appear on each search results page.
Can I block offensive content from my results?
Offensive Content Filter: You can reduce objectionable content from your search results by turning ON this feature. Note that this filter is not 100% safe. You may see some content you consider offensive even if you have turned on the filter, and it currently only works for English queries.
[ top of page ]Can I save my advanced search settings?
Yes, you can save your advanced search settings by pressing the "Save Settings" button. Your settings will be stored in your browser for the next time you are using the advanced search.
